Title: Possible portrait of the poet John Clare c.1840

Artist: Unknown

Size: 9” x 11.5"

Price:SOLD

A very interesting watercolour of a down at heel gentleman reading by a river painted c.1840. I believe it to be a portrait of the world renowned poet John Clare, portraits I have seen of him compare favourably with this. Clare was often to be seen wandering in the open air in shabby clothes. Bought in the East Midlands, not far from Clares home there is a good chance the sitter is meant to represent Clare himself. It is in good unfaded condition and will frame beautifully.
